A Cause For Celebration

Local fun at Hedlow Creek, Central Queensland

Hedlow Creek in Central Queensland (one of our all-time favourite places) has been saved from the new ‘Super Dump’… or at least won a reprieve.

Hedlow is an important natural permanent waterway in this area. The creek feeds Lake Mary and renews the local water table. Our council recently announced that a paddock running along part of the creek was to be the site of a new ‘super dump’ to be used by the local area councils. Consequently, there was a massive upheaval from land-owners, naturalists, environmentalists, etc (including us), all determined to prove that this site is not suitable for such a purpose.

So now, it seems that the council has decided to listen to their constituants on this one… YAY! They have admitted that the advice they received was flawed and that much more research needs to be done. They will be commissioning a much  more intensive environmental study into several areas in the near future.

Yes, I know that we need a new dump, but I also think that it should be put in the right place. Hedlow creek is not the right place. There is too much potential for wide-spread contamination of natural water courses in this area. I’m impressed that the council has had the backbone to look at this case again. Now, Mr Carter… don’t forget to ‘keep the bastards honest’.  😮

Congratulations and well done RC. Smart move.

Thanks Bob. I really am pleased with this particular one. That creek is just beautiful… I would hate to be sitting with my grandkids in another 20 years, telling them about the beautiful place that was once there, and then died because of polution. Knowing that they wouldn’t have the chance to experience it. That would be horrible…
